Post 17: The Unlikely Hero of Grief
The Prairie Vole
In my Biopsych class, we learned about the prairie vole. I remember my professor telling us it was the only rodent that mated for life, with the male staying to help raise the offspring.
Mice make me absolutely queasy. Even hamsters—supposedly the cute rodents—bring back memories of my brothers’ hamsters and those squirmy little legs running across my hands. I grimace just thinking about it.
But a loyal partner and devoted father? Hearing about him only a year after Rex died, I became a prairie vole fan.
Researchers wanted to understand what made prairie voles different from most other mammals. From my perspective as a student preparing for the next test, the answer I needed to recognize on the multiple-choice test was vasopressin, a hormone involved in bonding.
Of course, bonding is more complicated than a single hormone. But that one multiple-choice answer introduced me to a much larger idea: these little animals were biologically wired to form lasting attachments.
At the time, I thought I was simply memorizing an interesting fact for an exam. I had no idea I was learning something that would eventually help explain one of the most painful experiences of my life.
Wired to Form a Bond
Long before scientists could study bonding systems in the brain, British psychiatrist John Bowlby was trying to understand why separation causes such profound distress.
His work developed during an era when World War II made the consequences of separation painfully visible. During the London Blitz, many children were sent away from their parents to live in safer parts of the country. Their experiences, along with Bowlby’s clinical work and his study of child development and animal behavior, helped shape what became known as attachment theory.
Bowlby proposed that attachment was more than affection or dependence. It was part of a biological system that kept children close to the people who provided safety and care. Although attachment theory initially focused on children and their caregivers, our need for attachment does not disappear when we grow up. We keep forming bonds with the people who become central to our safety, identity, and understanding of home.
After thirty-two years of marriage, Rex was not simply someone I loved. He was woven into the way I understood my life and the world around me.
My brain expected him.
What Happens When a Bond Is Broken?
Years later, I discovered the work of neuroscientist Zoe Donaldson. She studies how the brain forms deep bonds, using prairie voles because of their unusual pair-bonding and parenting behavior.
Donaldson did not begin as a grief researcher. She was interested in what happens in the brain when these small animals choose a particular partner and form a lasting bond.
Then psychiatrist and grief researcher M. Katherine Shear asked a different question: If prairie voles can help us understand how attachments form, could they also help us understand what happens when a bonded partner is lost?
That question moves us from the biology of love into the biology of grief.
If the brain and body change when we form a bond, it makes sense that they would respond when that bond is suddenly disrupted. A grieving person doesn't experience sadness alone. The biological systems that helped create and maintain the attachment are also responding to the absence.
That helped me see grief differently.
The Brain That Kept Looking
Reading The Grieving Brain by grief researcher and neuroscientist Mary-Frances O’Connor added another piece to my understanding.
O’Connor explains that the brain is constantly making predictions based on experience. When we form a deep bond with someone, our brain encodes that person as part of us. We become a “we.”
That bond carries an enduring expectation: I will always be there for you, and you will always be there for me. If I cannot find you, I will search for you.
Our brains learn where our special person is and how to find them. If they are not with us now, they are somewhere else—and we know how to reach them. We can walk into the next room, drive to work, make a phone call, or wait for them to come home.
For thirty-two years, that expectation worked. Rex and I could find each other.
Then he died. Of course I knew Rex had died. I had witnessed that reality firsthand.
He had already stopped breathing when I found him, although I didn’t understand that at first. Following the 911 operator’s instructions, I placed my ear beside his mouth and listened for his breathing so we could time it. I was right there when he took his final breath.
Later, in the emergency room, I saw him beneath a sheet. I watched as the chaplain reverently lowered it so we could be with him.
I understood what had happened.
And still, my brain searched for him. At church, in a store, or at the park, I would see a man with Rex’s build or his walk. For a split second, my brain registered Rex before reality caught up.
Two months after he died, I returned to teaching piano lessons. During my final lesson one day, I glanced at the clock and automatically expected the front door to open.
Rex should be walking in any minute.
The thought came before I could stop it. Then reality returned: he wasn’t coming home.
I wasn’t in denial. I wasn’t refusing to face what had happened. I knew Rex had died. But knowing he had died and understanding why I continued to search for him were two different things.
Not Just an Emotion
Learning about the biology of grief was not simply interesting or fascinating to me. It was calming. Reassuring. Explanatory. Confirming.
It helped me understand that grief was physiological—not merely mental or emotional.
My brain, my circuitry, my body—my whole being—had been wired to find Rex. When he could no longer be found anywhere on this earth as I had known him, my brain could not simply erase thirty-two years of expectations.
The conscious mind can learn the fact of a death in a single devastating moment. The brain’s predictions change through experience. My brain had to encounter Rex’s absence again and again. It had to learn that he would not be at church, at the store, or beside me at home. It had to experience 5:15 again and again without hearing the front door open.
That kind of learning takes time.
This does not mean we stop loving the person who died. It does not require us to weaken the attachment or discard the relationship. The emotional connection can remain while the brain gradually learns that the person is no longer physically accessible in the familiar dimensions of space and time.
My faith assured me that Rex still existed and that our separation was not eternal. But I could no longer call him, drive to where he was, or wait for him to walk through the door.
My brain had to learn a new way to carry a relationship that remained precious to me.
Grief Is Adaptation
This is what the prairie vole eventually helped me understand:
Grief is not a failure to adapt. Grief is the process of adaptation.
Searching did not mean I was crazy. Expecting Rex did not mean I was denying his death. The terrible yearning to find him did not mean I was grieving incorrectly. My attachment system kept doing what it was built to do: find my special person.
Over time, repeated experiences began changing my brain’s predictions. I stopped expecting the door to open at 5:15. I no longer saw Rex everywhere I went. The moments when my brain searched for him became less frequent.
That did not happen because I forgot him, stopped loving him, or finally “moved on.” It happened because my brain slowly learned how to live in a world where Rex was no longer physically present.
And that is the hopeful part.
The brain that can form a profound attachment can also adapt when that person dies. We can learn to live in a changed world without erasing the person who helped create the world we once knew.
We can preserve the love, carry the bond differently, and gradually make room for meaning, joy, and happiness again.
The unlikely hero in this understanding of grief was a small rodent I once studied for a test. The prairie vole first taught me that we are biologically wired to bond.
Years later, it helped me understand why losing that bond hurt so much—and why my brain kept searching for someone my conscious mind knew could no longer be found.
I wasn’t crazy. I wasn’t in denial. I was grieving.
And my brain was doing the slow, painful work of learning a new world.
