Post 14: Love, Mapped in the Brain
Why the brain continues to expect the person who died
It was love, mapped in the brain.
That’s my own shorthand for something Mary-Frances O’Connor spends an entire book explaining. In The Grieving Brain, she describes how our brains build internal maps of the people we love—where they are, when they’ll be there, and how close we feel to them. Those maps don’t update simply because the person is gone.
We don’t usually think about the brain when we talk about love and grief. We assume falling in love and grieving are things we simply feel. But underneath the feeling, the brain is doing something very specific: it is building predictions.
Over years—over the thirty-two years of our marriage—the brain creates patterns around the people we love. It learns where they’ll be, what time they’ll walk through the door, and how they’ll sound on the phone. It weaves their presence into our routines, plans, and even our sense of who we are. The brain gradually encodes two separate lives as “we.”
I didn’t realize how completely my brain had organized itself around Rex until he was gone. The sound of the garage door. The rhythm of our conversations. The plans for retirement and travel we had made without ever writing them down, because we both simply expected them.
Those weren’t just hopes. They were patterns. And patterns don’t disappear simply because the person does.
When Rex died, my brain didn’t erase him. It kept expecting him—in the doorway, on the phone, in the passenger seat. When reality didn’t match that expectation, my brain sounded an alarm. I wasn’t in denial. My brain was still organized around a life that included him.
That is the heart of it: grief is not usually a failure to accept what happened. It is disrupted organization. The fact can be understood in a moment, but the brain’s expectations cannot.
In those early weeks, I forced myself to say, “my house,” “my children,” and “I live here”—not because I had stopped loving him, but because I felt it was the best way to face reality. It felt cold, but it wasn’t. It was one of the only tools I had.
This is also why you may still reach for your phone to text him. Why you glance at the clock, half expecting the sound of the door. When that expectation collides with the truth—that he is not coming home, not now, not ever—it feels like a gut punch in the beginning. Another grief wave crashing over you out of nowhere.
This constant mismatch also helps explain why concentration and memory can become so unreliable. The brain is using enormous energy to reconcile two competing realities: I know he is gone, and I still expect him to be here.
I remember hearing neuroscientist Andrew Huberman explain this on his podcast, and one idea stayed with me: however strong your faith, the person you love can no longer be found on this earth. That sentence gave language to something I had been living without words for.
Healing doesn’t happen because we decide to move on. It happens because the brain, slowly and often without our noticing, learns a new pattern. It stops searching in all the old places. Not all at once, and not on a schedule. But eventually, the wiring updates.
Understanding this changed everything for me. It replaced self-judgment with compassion. I wasn’t grieving wrong. I wasn’t weak, stuck, or failing to accept what had happened. My brain was doing exactly what brains do—learning, the only way it knows how, in the middle of the hardest lesson it will ever be asked to learn.
It was love, mapped in the brain. And now, slowly, my brain is learning how to live in a world where he is still loved but no longer physically here.
